Question Turn signals

Does anybody know if there is something available that will keep the turn signals on a bit longer ? ? ? I have a 2000 Heritage and the blinkers only stay on for about six blinks and by the time you reach the corner they have quit ! ! ! mainly a safety issue.

THANKS

+1, they are supposed to do about 20 blinks as long as you stay over 7 mph.

Here straight from the electrical diagnostic manual (2009) Page 3.1

When the directional switch is released, the system starts a 20 count. As long as the vehicle is traveling above 7 MPH (11.3 km/h) the directional will always cancel after 20 flashes if the system does not recognize any other input.

If the vehicle speed drops to 7 MPH (11.3 km/h) or less, including stopped, the directionals will continue to flash. Counting will resume when vehicle speed reaches 8 MPH (12.9 km/h) and will automatically cancel when the count total equals 20 as stated above.

The turn signals will cancel within two seconds upon turn completion. A sensor inside the TSM/HFSM cancels the signal after the vehicle has been returned to an upright position.

TSM: Turn Signal Module (also functions as a Bank Angle Sensor)
HFSM: The optional HD Smart Security System includes a HFSM, which provides the same functions as the TSM, but also includes security and immobilization functions.

I'm having the same issue. The newere models have a "lean sensor" in them that cuts the turn signal off after making a turn. I have that on my 08 Heritage and LOVE it. It will self cancel by timing out also if I change lanes and forget to turn it off. My 2000 Ultra signals cut off way before I want them to. I spoke with the dewaler about it and it is possible to put the newer turn signal canceling unit in an older bike, however you have to replace a harness that made it not cost effective. I am searching now for an aftermarket device that will "plug and play". Ideally one that has the lean sensor in it also. I will keep you posted if I find something. If anyone knows if there is such an aftermarket device, please let me know.

Something sounds wrong on yours for sure. But I use blinker, finger, blinker (2nd blinker if it goes off).

I have the same problem with my 2000 Night Train. I read on here a while ago about a way to do away with the self canceling thing. You had to cut some wires or rewire it or something. I don't remember the specifics. But the turn signal would stay on till YOU turn it off. I thought I had saved it, but I can't find it.

Chop On,
Robert

SO here is what I have learned. There is a speed sensor that is located in between the oil fill and the starter. There is one 3/16 allen head bolt that holds it in and there is a wire connected to it. It's about the size of a nickle however it is more shaped like an egg. It is basicly a magnet that goes down in the transmission and detects speed and calculates distance. It sends this to the speedo and the tsm (turns signal module). The tsm then knows when to cut off after distance traveled. So I pulled out the speed sensor and since it is a magnet it was covered in tiny shavings. I cleaned it off and reinstalled it. If this doesn't correct the problem then I will replace the TSM.

Same issue w/my 2000. The fix (I'm told) by SJ Harley) is to install the late 01 or newer t/sig module. It is timed so they stay on longer.

My wife's 03 stays on longer than mine.
