Default Exhaust questions

Hi everybody, new '06 Heritage owner here and I love it. But I'd like a little more exhaust rumble than stock. I'm not talking about straight drag pipes here, just something I can hear a little bit. I've got a couple of questions, though. Did I see somewhere that the '06 stock mufflers have a catalytic converter built into the muffler? If so, can it be replaced with a non-catalyst muffler without any ill effects? And does just an exhaust change mean I have to take it to the dealer and have the computer recalibrated? Like everyone, I'm on a budget here and trying to keep expenses down. I like the looks of the staggered duals that came on the bike, they're just too a little too quiet for my tastes. A friend suggested Screamin' Eagle slip-ons to replace the stock mufflers. Are they pretty much a bolt-on swap?

Thanks for the help!

Jeff

You're in the right place to get your question answered. The Screaming Eagle slip ons will help, and shouldn't be overly loud. That's the way I went with my Ultra. I also got the Stage 1 breather and the computer reflash. I'm unclear if the computer reflash would have been required if I just did the pipes and not the breather. The sound was louder and deeper but not obnoxious. I'm told H-D no longer sells the Screaming Eagle exhausts, but they are still available here and there. Another brand now sells them - I forgot who. For my Heritage I think I'm leaning more toward obnoxious, and going with Vance & Hines Big Radius and a good pair of earplugs. Still not sure if I can put passenger floorboards on the bike with the Big Radius - still trying to get that little bit of trivia answered before I commit.

Hey! The best for slip-ons are the Cycle Shack or Screamin'Eagle! My roommate has the Heritage and she had the SE slip-ons and loved it....however I just sold her my Cycle Shack...they were louder! I went with the full exhaust. The slip-ons are simple to put on....and we are girls....LOL
There is no need to change anything or modify anything with just Slip-ons!!!!! Our dealer told us that as long as we don't modify the air, we will not need to re-map!
There is no popping and they are by far the best way to go for the money!!!
If you are interested in the SE, she's going to put them up for sale today!!

GeezerGlider, I saw the Stage 1 breather in the catalog. That looks like it's pretty good bang for buck. Could you tell a pretty good "seat of the pants" difference in power with that? That may be on my list of future mods too, but for right now I just need some exhaust.

Candace, thanks for the reply. I might be interested in your roommates SE's. What style are they? Are they still in good shape? Has she set a price for them? BTW, I also took your advice that you left somebody else the other day and ordered a set of pullback risers for my handlebars. I'm having the same problem he was with being uncomfortable with the riding position. Hopefully the risers will help. Boy, times have changed... that's twice now I've gotten Harley advice from a girl! Keep up the good work!!!!

Hey! The Screamin' Eagle Slip-ons are the baloney cut ...they were on here 06 FLSTI and they retail for $274.99. They are in great condition and she wants $125 for them, and shipping paid by the buyer as well. If you want a photo, send me your email address and she can post a photo tonight for you!
Thanks again~

Well.. Here is my 2 cents worth. The slip-ons are ok, but if you like most of my friends who got them, you will be wanting to switch again at some point to a full blown exhaust system. The slip-ons are just no throaty enough, always leaving you with the feeling of wanting more. The Vance & Hines Big Shots Staggered, looks, quality and performance and…. yes indeed…..that sound.

Thats a good price! $125 I have a set off an 05 fat boy for sale for $275 with the head pipes, heat shields, etc but they are SEII with the removable baffles so you can modify until the cows come home.

Do yours have two bolts at the end of the muffler that will allow the baffle to be removed and they will say screaming eagle II on the one muffler? If so they are worth a lot more since you won't be able to buy them anymore with the new EPA regs that Harley has to live with.
