Default fuel gauge way off?

Fuel guage on 07 Deuce shows low level warning light when i'v e used about 3 out of the 4.9 gallons available. Is this normal? thought it would probably get down to about a gallon or so left before it comes on. Just got the bike about a month ago.

Yeah....I think the general consensus is that the majority of them are like that. Just be glad its not off the opposite way....reading half full when you're pushing it to the local gas station. I usually keep track of my miles and ignore the gauge.

Its an old story, Harley fuel gauges are just about worthless.
Do yourself a favor and learn to use the trip meter, if you start thinking about refilling it after 100 to 150 miles you'll never run dry.

Do a search of the forum and you'll find that a discussion of fuel gauge inaccuracy pops up about every other month.

Same deal here. I know this comes up all the time and I use my trip, but is there a way to fix it. I suspect it is not the gauge but the sending unit. Anyone come up with a method to calibrate or trick it?

Disconnect it . . . at least that way it will read wrong consistently and you'll have to use the odometer!

It's more trouble than it's worth. The best you could do is try bending the float arm in the middle (down in your case) in an attempt to tweak it toward reading correct, but that obviously involves taking the tank off, etc. just go off the trip meter.

I rely on my trip meter and use the fuel gauge secondary, never have trusted them. As far as calibration it would seem to me the floa.t would be the culprit

That is one thing I do not miss on my previous heritage. The stupid fuel guage. Mine was a carb with reserve so that helped. But at the end I just used the tripmeter. Nice not having that worthless crap on my bike now.
