Default Issue with lugging motor, 2012 Slim

Hey everyone, I've got a 2012 Slim with around 900 miles on. I was riding around today when I came to a red light. I always keep my speedo on the gear selector/rpm function and as I downshifted I watched it say the bike was in first and I also couldn't click it down another gear so I assumed it was in the proper gear. Once the green light popped up I went to take off and lugged the dogsh** out of the bike. Bad enough where I heard an audible clunk from inside the motor. I grabbed the clutch as quick as I could and sure enough the bastard dropped into first when I went to push it down. This is the second time this has happened since buying the bike. First time I thought I was at fault and chalked it up to a learning experience but this time I watched the gear selector and couldn't push down anymore on the shifter.

I'm worried about possible damage to the moto rand would like you guys' opinion. I'm dropping the bike off at the dealer on weds to have the 1000 mile service done and to tell them of the issue but I'd like to hear what the forum thinks as well!

I don't think you hurt it. Everything is still new and tight. If you're at a light and you don't think it's in first, ease the clutch out a little and pull it back in and then try to get it in first again.

Yep.....what he said!! Same thing happened with my 2011 SuperGlide Custom, at the 1K service I went with Amsoil and it felt like a different transmission.

I have a 2011 Blackline with the same gear indicator heads up display thingy. Just an FYI, when your clutch is in it doesn't tell you what gear you're IN. It tells you what gear IT THINKS you should be in which is still ridiculously wrong lol. Mine will say 4th when I'm rolling at 15 or 20mph and let the clutch out and for instance I'm in second, and It'll read the correct gear as soon as the clutch is engaged (Same scenerio if I'm coasting in nuetral, It still has a gear number there). As another example when going from 5th to 6th, the 6th gear indicator doesn't come on even though I've already pulled 6th gear UNTIL I've let the clutch back out.

I'm just more worried about possible damage to the motor since this has happened twice now and each time I heard an audible clunk.

After you ride a while , you wont need all the fancy (indicators)
Once you learn to feel the machine , it will become a natural thing ..

That's because the gear indicator works off the speed sensor at the gearbox and the RPM. So it is based on a RPM vs Speed calculation, not on the physical gear you are in. Your drive train must be engaged for the gear indicator to work correctly. The only gear sensor in the transmission is the Neutral one.

As for the clunk, mine is 3 years old, occasionally I'm in the wrong gear at stop lights etc. and get the "clunk" from the compensator. Happens to everyone once in a while. Would not worry too much about damage.

Quit worrying bout it,, U'll do it again in the future, it didn't damage the motor.

After a little while U won't need to look at the gear selector to know what gear Ur in. U'll know by experience.
