1st twin cam
Well guys I just sold my 99 heritage and replaced it with a 2000 heritage twin cam carbed model with 35000 miles and from what I can tell a stage 1 kit, the owner didn't know much about the bike but I wanted to ask you guys what should I look out for on it? I know I should check the cam tensioners, what else should I check? besides basic fluids and what nots, how long do the lifters last in these twin cams? thanks for any help.

Since the previous owner provided you with little or no historical information, I would perform a complete wheel to wheel service.
-Change all the fluids including the Brake Fluid. I believe the 2000 uses DOT 5 but verify.
-Change the Fuel Filter.
-Lubricate clutch and throttle cables.
-Inspect brake pads
-Inspect and measure thickness of the brake rotors. Minimum thickness should be stamped on the rotors.
-You may want to consider rebuilding the Brake Calipers
-Inspect all electrical connections.
-With a multimeter, check the charging system.
-Check the Primary Chain tension.
-Inspect Primary Chain tension shoe.
-Check Drive belt tension.
-Replace the wheel bearings the next time you change tires.
-Absolutely inspect the Cam Chain Tensioners!!!
Normally Lifters are not problematic on the Twin Cams. If you have to do any work in the cam chest such as tensioner replacement, upgrade to adjustable pushrods. The 2000 Softail was a one off year with several "Year Specific" parts such as the Stator, Regulator and Clutch Basket.
