In my mind if you can't put a chick on the back it isn't a bar hopper

If you are asking comfort, not as comfortable as others, depending on age. When I started dating my wife, Long - Long ago, weights less, but we were on a Honda 90, then Honda 125, and finally Honda 450, before I moved up to larger bikes and Harleys in the late 70s. She never complained. Now our weights are close to what you mentioned, while I am 5'8", moved from Dynas to a RKs which was a big improvement. Now that she's been riding in a lounge chair on the back for over 20 years I doubt she would consider going back.
Ride what you got, enjoy it until you don't or can't, You'll know when it is time to change for you both.
If you plan to make lots of longer trips 2 up, then yes I would consider a change as budget allows. Just because it can be done, doesn't mean it's the best or most enjoyable.

Resurrected from 8 years ago now, as the passage of time passes so is 290lbs about the average weight of an American these days?

Some solo guys claim to be that weight and ride Sportsters so that pair in post #1 should have no trouble, IMO.

If I can't drive home drunk with a bimbo I just met for unprotected sex, then I don't want to go.
