Yes it works fine for two up riding. Not to comfortable though.

A 1200 can easily handle the two of you. No problem at all.

The question is whether or not your wife's tush can handle the passenger "seat".

no problems there im about 5'6 230lbs and my wife is 4'3 180lbs and we took my 05 xlc 1200 with saddle bags fully loaded and sissybar bag full up over the mountain and it had no problems keeping up with the big boys, i wish i still had that bike loved it, but as for comfort get a touring seat for her that will help some and take a few breaks weather you need to or not she will love you for it

I use an iron 883 with a paper towel on the rear fender and it works fine with a passenger

If you get the right seat, absolutely. I have no trouble doing 2-up on mine. The gal's tell me their *** goes numb after about an hour, so it's hourly rest stops when trippin' it with someone.

Road 2up on a new at the time 2008 XLR1200 (Roadster). Not very comfortable for more than a short hop. Bottomed out all the time. Did this for almost five years then finally broke down and bought a new 13 Heritage. Should have done this the day after I bought the Sportster.
Sportsters are great for solo riding, if you wanting to do 2up, at least go for a Dyna!

Depends if she's spoiled by another bike already. The Sportster 1200 has plenty of power for two up riding.
My wife is 4'11'' around 100 lbs and spoiled by a Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 with Mustang seat and backrest. She will ride the Sportster with Mustang seat, backrest, and a set of air shocks. Before the seat and shock change she wasn't happy on the Sportster.
Setup almost identical to poster above, including chrome air shocks.
