Default K&N hi flow fitment

Does the KN hi flow reusable filter fit in the stock box on my 2002 XL1200. I was just told the one on my Sporty is not a stage 1 back its stock, seems I'm finding out more and more. I've ordered the hi flow filter and hope it will fit.

if its a k&n in the stock air box, then no that is not a High flo as defined as a stage 1. But it is a better flowing "stock" air filter. Check out Dk customs for ones of the best priced stage 1 filters around.

drinktothat,

I posted this question up in the "Best Stage 1 A/C" thread but can you elaborate why using a K&N with a stock assembly doesn't provide the same level of improvement as some of these Stage 1 units. Is there something else done in terms of venting or routing of airflow?

Thanks.

I got some things I ordered in, my pad for my new back rest, my breather kit, my 1" lower jiffy stand, but still waiting on my K&N A/C hoping it completes the stage 1. If not I'll have to order the ventilation back for the SE. Did get to install the Burley shocks and the pillow to my back rest, tomorrow I'll install the Burley fork kit and adjust my clutch, what the dealer didn't ...she creeps real bad when the clutch lever is all the way to the grip. Having fun working on a scoot again, when I'm done I'm taking a long run to nowhere. Will post some pic's in the what did you do to your Sportsers today thread.

The high flow k&n qualifies for a stage 1. Just not in the stock box. People have been known to drill holes in the backing plate to let more air in. I personnaly took a saw and removed the excess plastic around the bolts, which now let all the air i need in.

This filter can let more air in, just need a box that let more air in. That's why filter usually come with their own box.

For starters, the opening for air intake in the stock filter can for is too small/restrictive, and then there's the poorly designed, cheap plastic assembly.

A great thing to do --- K&N and more air -- don't forget that you will need more gas , and you WILL like the results

Thanks for the info guys. That is what I was hoping to hear. I actually like the way the stock unit looks on the Iron.

I've opened up the cover to allow more air in but I wasn't sure if there was anything else that these other aftermarket Stage 1 units did for venting. I see many of them claim their units are better over stock because they are externally venting.

I'm running a FuelPak3 on my bike and have the tune loaded for a hi-flow air cleaner and the short shots and it has responded well.

Wow I like that. How did you cut the cover and did you do the front, bottom, and rear of the cover

Used a piece of blue painter's tape to set the width and then got busy with a Dremel tool and a cutoff wheel.

I'm thinking about doing one more smaller cutout in the rear but it definitely has to have improved the flow.
