Is tank vent hose necessary?

If you overflow/vent would you rather have it drip on the ground or on hot engine and pipes.

I used to fill my bike up at the gas station in the morning before heading into work. When the warmer weather came, the gas would expand and some would vent out on to the ground. People would come in the building and tell me, "Your bike is leaking gas."
After I realized what was happening, I wouldn't fill up until I was ready to leave for the night. Anyway, without that vent hose, it would have gone either on the engine, or if that outlet was plugged, right out the cap and on to the gas tank. The hose is a good thing IMO.
