Default Sprocket cover bolt - do I need it?

I mentioned this in an earlier thread but just swapped my mid controls for forwards on my 2001 XLH. After removing the brake side foot peg from the sprocket cover I'm left with a 1/2" hole with nothing to put in it, other than the entire foot peg apparatus. Do I need a bolt here other than to fill the hole in the cover? I also removed that blue/gray bracket that went between the master cylinder and the cover as well and it doesn't seem necessary either as the master cylinder is now just bolted directly to the sprocket cover. I spoke with someone on the phone who told me the master cylinder would fall off without it, but as far as I can tell it literally does nothing. Below is an image of what I've got now after the install. Seems fine to me but please let me know if I'm overlooking something.

I would think it would be fine. Looks like there is a stud from trans for foot peg but all that is a cover.

You could look for a rubber or chrome cover to fit in there, to hide the hole.
