Seeking exhaust-quieting options to appease bitchy neighbors
Modest idle rumble and shaky rear pipe
I got a complaint letter from the HOA today about my riding through the community. I'm awaiting a callback about details about specifics of what is disturbing people (the loops through the parking lot I can stop, but the warm up noise I cannot).
As ridiculous as this question may be here, I'm looking for options for quieting down the stock exhaust a bit. I'm uncertain of the condition of the stock mufflers (I do feel the need to wear earplugs when riding). As per the video linked above, I don't know if something is dislodged that may be adding to the noise level. I've tried looking to baffles or replacement stock mufflers, but it's unclear if any of these options would improve matters. I also don't know if pulling the K&N airbox filter and throwing in a lame stock airbox filter would muffle this a little as well.
I know this is completely contrary to what most people want from a Harley (and maddening since the people that I've encountered have nearly all given me the thumbs up), but this may mean the difference between me keeping this bike and either trading it for something quieter or giving it up altogether, which I'd rather not do.
Any suggestions that could help me keep and quiet down this Sporty (preferably more productive than "get a Honda")?

That rear muffler looks about to fall off you have to tighten that up.
I suspect the complaint might be based more on the “loops around the parking lot” than the noise level.
Try just starting it with no reving up and drive out to the road as quietly as possible and just ride gently while it finishes warming up and when you return just roll quietly thru the lot and shut it off right away, again with no reving up. I bet the complaints stop with a little common courtesy.
