RECALL 2006/2007 xl1200L & 2007 xl1200N
[sm=angrymail.gif]I got the recall in the mail yesterday. It states verbatem,
"A defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists on certain 2006 and 2007 xl1200L and 2007 xl1200N model motorcycles built from oct 31, 2005 through May 16, 2007. These motorcycles were designed and built with a condition whereby the pant leg of some riders can have direct contact with the exhaust pipe. This condition could cause the pant leg to char or burn, wich could lead to the possibility of injury to the rider."
It also states that they will replace with a new exhaust shield P/N 66851-07

RE: RECALL 2006/2007 xl1200L & 2007 xl1200N
ha! i guess i wasnt the only one complaining about there pants and shoes catching on fire, hahaha. i had to wrapp my exhaust with heat wrap to even drive the bike around without catching on fire. now it still turns my pants brown but no flames anymore. its a **** poor design the only way to fix it is to get a new exhaust.

Might not. Rumor is the new shield fits under existing shields. But, if they intend to replace exisiting shields, and yours were coated, don't get the recall work done. File your notice away with your other maint records and get it done later if you change from the coated shields. Or, pass the notice on to the next owner if you sell or trade.
I've had my 1200L for over a year and have never had an issue with hot pants. I'm not even sure how it happens. I mean, I've got the general idea understood fine. I just don't see how these particular models present any greater burn/fire hazard than any previous or exisiting models with mid-controls. Exhaust gets hot.....on every bike. Don't put your pants on it. Obviously I am oversimplifying or there wouldn't be a recall. Maybe its a function of height whereby the shorter you are, the less you can bring your feet out and subsequently the closer your pants are to the exhaust. One of you pollsters should pose the question - of those that have been burned, how tall are you/what is your inseam in inches?

My wife and sister both just had the new heat shield installed on their '07 1200Ls. It's pretty much a heat shield installed under the existing heat shield. You can't see it unless you look behind the one that's already on there. Hopefully this will fix the problem. My wife already ruined one pair of brand new jeans because of the problem.
