Lifetime find
I have made the find of a lifetime. My sister in law bought a 2005 sportster xl 883 new. Before she could learn to ride, she injured her shoulder. The bike sat in her kitchen (not kidding) for ten years. After that, front yard. She said I could have it if I took it home. DONE! Other than just age, it only has nine miles on it!
My need is how to first put FI on it and modern electronics. HELP!!

Leave the carb. It's a good setup. There are owners who convert from EFI to carb just to keep things simple.
Spend your money on fresh new tires (the old ones are not roadworthy) and who knows what else you'll need that has dried out while sitting all that time.

I agree with the others. If you want EFI, trade it in on a 2007+. Converting it is a can of worms.
The 2005 is a really, really good year. Second year of the rubber mounted motor. 2004's have a disproportionate number of crank failures, 2005's are fine. Also, 2005 was the last year for tappet anti-rotation pins. In 2006 they went to a cheapo plastic device that can't handle much lift. The 2005 is one of the best. Keep it, ride it, convert it to a 1200/1250/1275 if you feel like you need more power, enjoy it.

So you`re saying she isn`t much of a motorcycle rider, or cook....
It has an electronic ignition and a good carburetor, nothing more needed.
Look for rust or peeling liner inside the fuel tank.
