Default Tach

What do you think? Does the bike need to have a tach? Mine did not come with one but I'm thinking about adding one this winter and suggestions? Is it an easy add or should I bring the bike to someone to have it done? I have one on my old '78 suzuki and kinda liked having it. I don't know if it is worth the price plus installation if its not an easy add.

I'm having a tach put on mine. I really find that I want to see what the RPMs actually are, because the engine noise alone can be misleading. It's a bit pricey, of course. $120 for the tach, $20 for the mount, $40 for the housing.

But, I find I really want the information the tach provides.

Personally, I would only add one on my bike for "curiosity's sake." I don't need it, but it would be interesting to see when I'm shifting. I can't justify the cost, but I know it's more important for others and they can justify the cost.

YES! No bike should be without a tachometer. I honestly use the tachometer WAY more than I use the speedometer because it tells useful information about the bike. I couldn't care less what speed I'm going. We put the tach on our 883R ourselves and it is really easy. It takes about 1-2 hours tops. And there is no real wirework involved at all -- just plug it in. It is absurd to take your bike in for the tach if you have the tools and the service manual. Put a tach on your bike. I think all "uni-nut" / "unicorn"/ neutered bikes look hideous because they have no tach. The tach makes the bike.

When I first got my bike, I really thought it needed a tach. It was originally at the top of my wish list for additions. Then, I discovered the bike has a rev limiter, and won't let you go beyond red-line. Plus I saw a few Sportys with the tach, and unlike some on here, I perfer the look of my "uni-nut" neutered bike. So, the tach is no longer on my wish list at all.

I don't know of any seasoned Harley rider that consideres a tach to be a "must have" item. I guess if you are a new rider or coming from metric rockets they may seem important but as you gain a real feeling for the bike it really isn't needed. Kind of like traning wheels on you first bicycle.

What tools are required for the job? I have almost every tool to tear my old '78 Suzuki apart and rebuild her (I've had to do it many times). Now that I finally have a Harley I should have all the tools I need since everything is in INCHES not metric.

Without the tach how are you able to adjust your idle? I do not ever look at thetach while riding but do pay attention to it while at idle. I'm just wearry because I had so many problems with my old bike that I became acustom to checking everything over before each ride.

I use the tach on my bike the way I use the tach on my old english sportscar - way more than my speedometer. I have put 3 of them on for myself and others. VERY easy install with regular tools.

I added the tach kit to mine. For me, it's a valuable engine instrument - from keeping an eye on idle, to working the enrichener during warm-up,plus it's how I measure speed.

Sure, anyone can do without it and maybe 'real' HD's don't have tachs but me being an old-fashioned gear-heada tach is part of the performance. Like the one I had on the hood scoop of my old SS Chevelle...
