Default Keep RK or revert to Sportster

I will try to makea long story short. I bought a 2006 Sportster in May of 2006, my first Harley but not first bike. It was stolen in December of 2006. I was deployed March 2007 and am still here. I waited to deploy to buy a new bike with the deals they offer while deployed or being over seas. So, I ended up with a 2007 Road King Custom after going back and forth with the Street Bob for a couple months. On leave I rode it a couple of times in 20 degree weather. I like it but damnI miss my sportster. The sporty is sodamn nimble. So, I'm debating if I should pay it off and have keep it for years to come, and maybe it will be worth some dough since it's the last year they made the Road King Custom unless they bring it back. Another reason I like it is the wife can ride with. I want her to get her own bike so we can both ride and if I sold the RK we could afford two bikes (sportsters). So, as you can see, I run through scenarios in my mind while I'm over here every day.I think once I get back and ride the RK more, I will want to keep it but damn, I really miss the sportster.

Thanks for your opinion

First off, THANK YOU for your service to our country. Do all of us a favor and come home in one piece.
Now, I say keep the King. There are plenty of used Sportsters with low miles to be found, most are cheap enough. I was like you, but, I traded my beloved Sportster for my King. WishI didn't at times, soI got another Sportster at a good price with only 5000 miles. It's my new "project" scooter. That might be another avenue to think about.

Tough call.... but I'd call it "upgrade to Sportster".

Is AAFES still giving decent discounts to Soldiers in theater? How longtill you need to decide?

Zimbob, thanks for the post and thank you for your support. That’s kind of what I was thinking. I have to get another sporty, I would love to throw a springer front end along with a 16” tire. I too want a project scooter. I have been inspired by The Horse Magazine and some DVD’s I’ve watched dedicated to the “garage builder”. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Rusty914,
Ha! Good call on the upgrade but I don’t recall saying anything about downgrading. Yeah they’re still giving discounts, it’s not that great though, only like 1,000 off MSRP when all said and done but it’s better than nothing. Also, they have deals on older models in stock. Oh, I’ve already picked the bike up so I would have to do it when I got home. I think I will just get another sporty down the road and I can’t wait. Nice bike by the way, do you have the vance and hines slip on’s? That’s what I had on mine.

$1,000.00 off MSRP is quite a savings when most dealers around here are charging $1,000.00 ABOVE MSRP. That's 2k worth.

Do what your heart and gut tell you to do. Only then will you be truly happy. We can support you, pray for you, and keep you in our thoughts. But we can't pick the right bike for you. And don't let your wife be a deciding factor. I've found that letting a wife bea factor can lead to divorce easily. Get what YOU want. She'll adapt.

God Bless, and come home safe!

trever, thanks so much for putting your life on the line for our country!

RK and Sporty are opposite ends of the Harley spectrum. As nice and comfy as a RK is, to me it is not what I consider the quintissential riding experience. I prefer simple.

Yep... I have V&H with baffles installed. Nice sound, but it doesn't cause complaints from the neighbors.
