Default Stage 1 with stock pipes

I did some searching but could not find a specific answer to this question so I thought I post it. Has anyone out there ever done a Stage 1 upgrade but left the stock pipes on? Would that be considered a .5 stage upgrade? I'm considering just replacing the air cleaner with a K&N or Screaming Eagle and then doing a rejet but leaving the stock pipes on. This should give me better performance I would think but probably not as good as putting some SE slip-ons I imagine.

I have always considered a complete stage 1 to be: exhaust, intake & re-jet/re-map etc. I would think you could gain a slight increase in performance by just changing the filter element (kind of like throwing a K&N filter in your truck). The restricted stock exhaust won't be able to take full advantage of the increased air flow though.

Kinda like eating more food with a cork in your butt. Not much point in increasing the intake volume if it has nowhere to go.

A stage 1 is freeflowin pipes freeflowing AC remap/rejet and a High perfornamce coil and ingnition. Harley shops call pipes ac and rejet a stage 1 to make the buyer feel good but its just a stage.5 what you are considering is less than that. But it still should make your bike run better, but not near as much were you to do the pipe too,
+1 charlys analogy...

If you're not going to change both the aircleaner and exhaust together, changing the air cleaner alone will have a greater effect on performance than changing the exhaust alone.
