K C, you got it!! Has been my favorite bike since 1969. For those who bought a Sportie just for the price, shame on you! You could have purchased a dyna for a couple more thousand or even a used for the same price. When you buy a Harley, get ready to spend a grand or 2 to make it your own. If your thinking about money spent, your better off buying a Honda. I bought a Sportie because I wanted a Sportie. My taxes are already about 1800 and growing. Getting to replace my front tire at 200 bucks with only 7k miles..

For me, the Sportie is a preference. Not because it was cheaper.

"I read that Harely designed the Sporster for someone who is 5' 9" and about 170 lbs "

I doubt that... they fit me in '69 when I was a strapping lad of 6'2" and 180# and they fit me now that I'm a strapping man 40 years older and 30# heavier. As long as chicks like Gypsie dig them so will I. (yummm....!)

I chose the Sportster because once I got on it, it fit me very well. The price was right and I liked the bikes balance. I have a 1200CLow and ride it everywhere and if I do not ride it I feel guilty. As far as the larger bikes are concerned, I could see perhaps owning a Dyna for I see it as just an upgraded Sportster. The large tourers like the Road King are nice but I do not see them as true bikes. Too many gadgets and to me it stops being a bike if it has all the things a car has. Moves like a car, features like a car, handles like a car it is a car.

I liked how mine looked, something about it just called out and it just seemed different than other sportys and the price was right.
I am looking to upgrade (regards to bigger) this winter and either my sister or girlfriend will be buying my sporty so I will still get rides on it. I hope it stays with my girlfriend because then I can ride it whenever I want.

When I went to our local dealer a couple of days ago, the owner (he has been riding Harleys since they first came out) and I were talking and I told him how much I loved the lava-red-sunglow Lowrider they had back in the showroom. He looked at me, squinted his eyes and told me not to even consider trading my bike in for something like that. He said that there is NOTHING that bike could do that my bike couldn't do. He also said that people might bad mouth Sportsters, but that is the best bike Harley makes. He said that people could buy all of the big bikes they wanted to, but in the end, the Sportster would still be running while their bike wasn't. He grinned hugely at me when I told him it was just the color that I loved and thought that color would look cool as flames on my bike. He is a great guy and absolutey appreciates just what a Sportster is

ORIGINAL: JosephGarcia

i can compare it to trying to play death metal with a telecaster, normally its a bad idea, but some people make it work haha
LOVE that analogy. You're all over it, JG. Because a telecaster in the right hands can do just about ANYTHING!
