I know the manual calls for 87.
I'm really asking what the owners are actually using in their bikes.

I used 93 when my bike was an 883, and continue to use it now that it's a 1200.

I use 87 octane. My 883 runs the same with regular as it does with premium.

As said above,,my 2008 883L requires 91 octane tooas stated in manual.
I follow that religiously.
A little advice...go to your local hardware store and get a couple 2 or 3 5 gallon tanks.
Go to the gas station and fill them all with 91 OCT.
Why ?
Gas is going up daily. By stockpiling now, you can drive on your reserve and save $ for months

For months??? That's a week for me. You must only ride to the local bike night once a week.

Yep, sounds to me like storing a few extra gallons away is more trouble than it's worth.....

But I put a lot of miles on my bikes (over 2,000 miles so far this month) and will probably add quite a few more before the month is done..

My 883 gets around 55MPG.
I have now 4 5gal tanks.
Thats 1100 miles.
I really have a tough time thinking anyone drives that in any given week. let alone several weeks.
Not in Nebraska, anyway

What you define as "more trouble then its worth" is a foolish comment as stockpiling gas will save you money from day one. You freeze the price at the day your purchased the reserve.
The more tanks you fill and store, the more you will save.

I run good quality 87 octane. At first I tried higher, but there was no difference in performance, or fuel mileage.

With the compression ratio, there is no reason to run higher.

As far as keeping some gas stored around...I'm not usually anywhere near home, when I need my next tank of fuel. I'm with OFG, close to 2,000 miles this month, and some more to go. And ya know, that stuff does evaporate, and go stale. Ya might store 5 gallons, but not have 5 gallons once you get around to using that stale gas.

Oh, and I did do about 1,100 miles last week...But then none of them were in Nebraska. 5 or 6 other states, but not Nebraska.

On 883's prior to 07 (carb) require 87 Octane. 883's 07 & up (EFI) require 91+ Octane. Running higher octane than your motor requires is a waste on money.
As a person who spent many a day in the petro field in the Army (I ran fuel farms & tankers) Anyway it's not a total waste of money, the fuel is cleaner and burns off better with less build up. Just so you know some company's do not use seperate trucks to deliver fuel. They run the top 3rd of their truck into the best grade, the middle as mid and the bottom of the tanker is your low grade. Guess what sits at the bottom? Sediments thatare mixed in the fuel and then into your engine
