Default 2008 and 2009 Sportster Gas Cap

I just bought my first Harley, a 2009 Sportster 1200 Custom and, so far, love it. However, the gas cap is barely sticking up above the chrome (tin?) tank strip and it's a real pain trying to get it off and on. Do people just live with it or do they remove the chrome strip or buy a different gas cap? Thanks for any info.

Try pushing down on it with the parm of your hand and turn at the same time. Oh by the way welcome to the site.

Thanks for the welcome and info. I've been using the palm of my hand, but it's still hard. Maybe, I'm just weak! I'll keep practicing.

I just noticed that I spelled palm wrong. LOL, I't doesn't go any tighter than the clicks. Try using the heal of your palm and turn at the same time.

I just tried again using heal of palm and turning, but it is awfully hard to get off and on. If the cap only stuck up a quarter of an inch, it would be much easier, but probably wouldn't look as cool. LOL! My daughter-in-law has an "07 1200 Custom and our son, her husband, removed the gas tank metal strip. I can remove and put hers on easy. I was wondering if a pop-up cap would work. Oh well, besides being weak (which I am <grin>, hopefully, someone will come along with some other suggestions.

Thanks for welcome and letting me know that I'm probably not the only one that's weak.

Thumbs up No Longer Whimpy!!!

Took the bike out today and tried getting the gas cap on and off while I still had my gloves on. Big difference between bare palm and gloved palm. I kind of feel like a dumb s***.

Hey, I'm no longer a HD newbie I now have 74 miles, passed the magic 50, on the bike. Really love the way the bike handles.

I have the same issue after adding the chrome trim to my 2007 XL883C Sportster. I'm going to add a cover to the top of the cap to give me a little traction. I'll let you know how it works. I'm adding the following: http://americancycle.corecommerce.co...Cap-Cover.html. I'll send a ppicture after I install it.

Strange how once or twice a month someone drags up a 5 year old thread and then talks as if it happened yesterday.
