'94 Custom 1200XL - need exhaust suggestion
I purchased a custom '94 1200Xl this past Spring and it currently has a set of Sweepers. I have had it Dyno'd and Jetted but I we just cant get the torque to maintain from 2500-3200. It takes about a 20 HP drop and I get a lot of back fire. I want to move to another pipe but I haven't been able to find anything that has an aggressive look like the sweepers expecet for the newer pipes. Can anyone help me understand if the newer pipes are just mounted different but would fit the '94 or is there something else that is a problem. I have many friends who could help me do a ne weld or make a bracket if thats the only problem. Or if anyone has any suggestions on a nice set of shorty pipes that I won't have the same torque issues.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Any pipes from 86-03 will fit your bike. Sounds like your problem is that you're running without baffles. Doesn't matter what pipes you try....you'll wanna run baffles in em. If they're curved or you can't get baffles in em, try torque cones....but honestly those tend to suck *** for the most part. If your friends weld, why not have them make you a set of pipes? All you need is the brackets at that point, and if you have to fab a new mount, they can do that for you as well. Then you can have any look you want.

Thanks for the info Road Warrior - I have tried the stupid torque cones and larger gasket - that did nothihg for me. Maybe I need some schooling in Baffles but I was of the understanding that Baffles were really only used to keep the noise down on the pipes and had nothing to do with back pressure issues. If you think that might help I can certainly try and get a set and install. AS for the custom pipe route I had thought about that but am not experience enough to know what the right step down would / should be and how would I not run into the same problem. Then there is the chroming issue. I have only had to re-chrome a couple of bumpers on my hot rods never from scratch - same process??
Thanks again for the help.

Baffles do wonders on back pressure, what you're hearing isn't back firing, it's reversion, and you'll definitely want to put some in your pipes. If you don't want to lose the sound, buy some baffles and drill some holes in'em, this way you'll gain some back pressure and still retain some of the sound.

Like said above, you need some baffels dude. I believe big city thunder has some baffels that should fit. If you want to change the pipes, give bassani a look. I ran the pro street pipes on my '02 sportster and loved them. sounded great out of the box and got better with every ride. Helped on HP and Torq. too.
