I had my 883 converted and it did have a good amount of power. It started using oil like crazy so I traded it in on the Street Bob I have now. I probably wouldn't have if it didn't develop that oil problem. I was happy with the Sporty and didn't really think the ride was all that bad. Did some long rides and was ok with it.
As soon as I got the Street Bob I got kind of spoiled and the ride is a hell of a lot better than the Sportster. The engine feels just as powerful as that 1200 conversion and it just glides down the highway effortlessly unlike the Sporty which was all wound up on the highway.
Before the conversion my Sporty got about 50 mpg on the highway, after the conversion it got about 47mpg. My Street Bob with stage 1 gets about 50mpg on the highway.

If you have the money the Dyna is the better move. If you don't have the money the Sporty is still a good bike to have. Don't ride the Dyna if you don't think you will move to one or you may just get spoiled like I did.

Hoping folks are still watching this thread. I have a 2005 XL883C. I am looking at a couple of options here. I was hoping to get some insight. I am looking for a more speedy and comfortable ride with about 70% solo and 30% 2up.

Option 1:
883 to 1250 conversion with NHRS 1250 conversion kit
30 tooth front pulley for better gear ratio

Option 2:
1994 Dyna Chopped with Andrew Cam +more (for $5200)
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/mcy/3433850024.html

Option 3:
2001 Electra Glide Touring that I will convert into my own chop project
http://monterey.craigslist.org/mcy/3295334271.html

No matter what, I am going to get parts powder coated and painted so the colors aren't a big deal. I am looking at cost, work and the quality of the ride. I am not planning on racing, but I'd like to be comfortable and be able to cruise at 80 MPH with the ability to pass. In California traffic, you get rolled over if you're not going 75-80.

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks.

Personaly i would do the 1250 kit from Hammer Dan....
http://hammerperf.com/

Then i would get a 32T front sprocket...

if you have a small tank get a bigger tank from a custom form Ebay... there are also plenty of people who want the small tank and would trade thier BIG tank for the small one!

Also its a good idea to get a Matching A/C and a good exhaust to feed the 1250 kit...

BTW the stock CV carb with a Good jet kit in it works wonders and will support just shy of 95hp... anything over 90 the stock CV becomes a bottle neck!

Also if you have a Carb Sportster a Daytona Twin Tec TC88A ignition module is a MUST have... it really does complete the Stage 1 setup!

Also 5'5" and bought a 1200c this year. Love it for commuting, and day trips. Can't see ruining the cool with bags and a shield, but with a 4.5 gal tank and the Viking raven bag I can easily spend a 1 up weekend on her. That said, if I knew I could spend more time touring I love the Switchback. Not a ton of cash, lighter than most big twins with bags, 6 speed 103.

Anyone else prefer hammer over NHRS? I think I'm going to test ride the 94 dyna just to see if I even like the feel. If I don't I think I may regret at least not trying one before I spend money on the Sporty upgrades.

I'm not much into touring. I do like to go on long day rides though and the 883 can be rough on my back when the roads aren't smooth. Any suggestions on better suspension? I'm running a LaPera Daytona Sport seat that I am just breaking in as well.

Thanks for the advice evo.

I picked up the 1250 conversion, the pulley and the curb tuner kit. Can't quite afford the ignition just yet, but will definitely do that ASAP.

This is turning out to be a nice winter project!
