883 to 1200 conversion - is it worth it?
#33
I never had a desire to upgrade my 05 883xl, stage one and it would do 105, only went that fast once after I rejetted. I was always worried about problems and thought I would keep it for 100,000 miles, my biggest issues were seat and front and back springs which I changed to make it better for long trips. Then the Bones came out, if it never came out I would still be riding the 883 and loving it.

Well after a few posts over at XL Forums I finally got NRHS to respond and they did indeed say that the problem was with the rings they were selling and the problems of oil use on 04s and up have been resolved with a different oil control ring pack.
I asked them to start a new thread over there letting everyone know the solution but they refused and said if anyone was having a problem they should contact NRHS. They also said they have given free rings to 4 people they know of with the problem. If anyone else is experiencing this problem contact NRHS and ask for free rings to fix the oil usage problems created by the parts they sold to you.

Faster?
I bought a new '98 XL1200C and thought the acceleration was okay.
I sold the '98 and bought a new 2000 XL883L and it was way too SLOW, so I had the dealer (in Fairfax, Va.) put the full 1200 kit in it and it was awesome FAST... and I never had a problem with it, although it did have a big appetite for fuel.
I moved and didn't ride much for a while, so I sold the 2000 (big regret!).
Last year I bought a used '06 XL1200R and love it. It's not quite as fast as the 883-1200 conversion, but it is plenty quick for this OldCoot...
If you already own the 883, I'd upgrade it if you have the money. If you haven't bought one yet, buy a 1200 ...there's less to worry about, plus resale will be much better (trust me on that!)...

I'm 55 years old so i don't care about top end speed. I did the conversion to my bike and used the 883 heads which have smaller combustion chambers and it is a torque monster. This bike is so much fun around town. It is super quick from red light to red light.have a couple thousand miles on it and it don't use no oil.Parts and labor was less than a grand.

Received a reply from Daniel Dunn, the president of NRHS. Here is the msg "The oil problems never, I repeat NEVER happened on 03 and older bikes. It was only on 04s and up and it was not just our kits but a problem that existed on even brand new bikes with no mods from the factory. But we have solved it even on the newer bikes with different rings and better valve seals. So what I am saying is there never was a problem on 03 and older bikes so there was nothing to solve. No worries."
If anyone wants the msg as sent to me, PM me and I will send it but If you have had a problem with the NRHS conversion I would suggest that you contact Dan and air it out with him Seems like a straight shooter

Yep there was never a question about it being a problem on 03 and older bikes.
I got a pm from someone over on XL Forums yesterday though and he tried the new rings from NRHS and he said it didn't solve the problems. He did tell me he tried some different rings though and so far it seems to have helped.
There was a problem on 05 bikes from the factory with the valve seals and Harley fixed that if your bike was still under warranty.

883 conversion to 1200
I did it on my '02 883 and loved it, I used Buell heads, slugs, and cylenders, crane cams, crane single fire ignition and she ran in the 10's with stock 883 gearing. topped out around 115. She didn't get run that hard all the time, but when I needed it I was glad it was there. As for your scoot, do what makes you happy, it's your bike. I would listen to KingSon though, very sound advise.
It sounds real good. Havent rode yet though.
