Default 83 sportster xlx

hey guys, just bought an 83 sportster xlx and i believe it has an aftermarket gas tank. the tank on the bike has 2 gas caps. everywhere i read on the internet it looks like the bike came with a peanut style tank with one cap. i thought one was for gas and the other for oil, but on the right hand side of the bike below the seat is the oil tank i believe. stupid question, what is the other gas cap located on the left hand side of the tank?

It may be fake, If you've only got 1 petcock and it's not fake then it makes no difference. I seem to remember someone at some time making a split fatbob tank with 2 chambers but that would be rare and could be just a leftover hallucination from those days long ago....

I think there have been a number of after market tanks over the years that have been designed to look, from the outside, as if they are split tanks with two separate chambers, but which in reality are only a single tank with two filler holes in the top.

Pics would help alot but I'm guessing a mustang tank. Alot of them around. they have two caps and look somewhat like the peanut tank. I don't see it myself though. Try to post a picture and I'm sure someone here will tell you exactly what you have.

I would agree with this. The right side should be where you fuel up.

The XLX is kind of rare. It is a sportster that has been set up for touring. The tank might be stock. I know that they came with a bigger tank from the factory. I could be wrong but you really should do some careful research on this baby.

you gonna post some pics?

pictures, its aftermarket and yes the oil tank is on the side of the bike. the right side is for filling up and the left is for show to mimic the dual tank look.

The XLX was a stripped-down, blacked-out model, sort of the ancestor to the Nightster. You're probably thinking about the XLS or XLT.
