Default fuel light issues

hi there, was wondering if anyone has ever had problems with their 07 sportys low fuel light coming on way too early? ive asked a dealer about it and they said theres probably a float sticking in the tank. the bike is still under warranty so ill probably have them fix it. but if its simple enough i'd like to take a stab at it. also does anyone know if the 2 year unlimited mile warranty covers parts and labor or just one or the other? ive found one thread talking about this problem but no definite answers to fix it. thanks a lot for any imput.

I have an 08 1200C and noticed a fuel light issue with mine early on. My light will come on with 2 gallons left in my 4.5 gallon tank. Numerous people in this forum have the same issue with the early fuel light. Best thing to do is go by the mileage and ignore the light. I asked a couple of people at the dealer and have never gotten a definitive answer. I think the sensor is just placed too high in the tank.

They won't be able to fix anything. It's normal. Mine comes on at 99 miles all the time. Usually only takes about 2 gallons (tank holds 3.3) at that point. Use the trip and watch the milage.

There is no float, its a magnetic strip that detects fuel level based on electrical resistance.
Don't touch it yourself and It's doubtful the dealer can fix it either (especially if they think there is a float).
Just use your odometer to plan fuel stops.

Been there, done that. Dealer wont be able to do a thing about it, mine comes on at about 110 miles and my tank takes 4.5 gallons, at that point I begin a looking for a gas station I know I can go a lot further than that but would hate to run out of fuel. Some day I'll see exactly how far a tank will take me but for right now I'm fueling every 120 miles or so.

I just bought an 07 Sporty last week and have only four tanks of gas through it. First tank the fuel light came on at 84 miles. Since I've gotten used to the throttle, the rest have been in the 93-96 miles. Seems to have slightly less than 1.2 gallons left in the tank when the light comes on. I've been getting 45 mpg consistently over the last few tanks, so in theory I should have 150 miles in the tank. 120 or 125 miles would seem to be a safe Bingo under normal conditions, but I haven't pushed it that far yet. I'll edge up in that direction slowly. I'm a pretty conservative rider and a contented member of the Slowpoke Squadron, so you should keep records and track the averages for your riding style.

I have the 08 w/4.5 gallon tank. My average mileage is 47 to 50 mpg. I figure worst case (45 mpg) and fuel up accordingly. I can safely go 170 miles and at least have 1/2 gallon left. i have gone 180 miles no problem. I weigh 215# and usually carry 10 to 15# of crap to work with me every day. Mostly highway. Mostly 70 to 80 MPH. Sometimes my fuel light comes on at 115 miles other times at 140 to 145. Can't rely on it for sure.

just use the odometer as a fuel gauge. everyone complains that the light comes on after only half a tank

thanks a lot guys, ive got the 4.5 gallon tank and assuming theres a half gallon left when the engine dies im guessing about 160 miles would be the safe limit to go, and so far that hasn't failed me yet. about 42 to 45 miles per gallon i average. i know my 300 pounds doesn't help that. im going to carry a half gallon can with me one day and see how many miles it actually putters out at.
i would really like to ignore the light but when it comes on as im pulling out of the gas station it really pisses me off. not only that i just comes on speratically for a few minutes at a time. i would be less tiffed if it came on too early at a certain mileage all the time but its right when i fill up and every 10 to 15 miles later for about 2 or 3 minutes at a time untill it actually stays on when im starting to run low. thanks again for the imput guys.
