One of my local dealers told me that if Harley doesn't do the 1k service, it voids the bikes warranty, is this correct?

Service can be done by anyone. Just keep receipts. I took mine in just because I wanted them to be resposible for any failures that may happen later on. This is the first time anyone goes over the bike since it left the factory.

This is my understanding we have been servicing my friends iron and it is not brain surgery but I have worked on cars for 15 years 10 of those at dealers and know how manufactures work and don't want to give them an out on any future warranty issues. My 48 is due for the service anyone had any issues with doing the 1k service themseves

It's too much. Change the oil/filter yourself and learn to do your own work. It's much more rewarding and saves a ton of money.

No! Doing the service yourself or and indy does not in any way void the warranty. Just keep your receipts.

Google Magnuson-Moss warranty act. It states that if the manufacturer requires that their dealers must do the service to keep the warranty, they must provide the service for free.

Inform yourselves so that you can identify BS when you here it. Then get a pair and tell off the person saying the lies.

Absolutely right, Ih4x4! My wife doesn't let me work on her machine, so we took it in, and it was $138 using Amsoil synthetics.

Several adjustments around the cluch, breaks, etc. were also made.

The dealer is re-imbersed by HD, and it is part of the HD MFG quality program. The MFG will also call the original owner after every service to insure the bike is OK (at least up to 15K).
Never heard that! I've yet to be called after any of my services.

tproasi - When your are 70 like me one should have substantially more information. The suggestion that I made was not to a specific individual but to anyone as staff at the dealer do know the score and still will pull their line of bs. When they do they absolutely should be called out for it and loose the business. Where I trade they know not to say a word or I'm gone. They want my annual new bike purchase and the know that I do my own service. When and if I come in for a warranty item, they fix it without question.
