HD SYN 3 or dino oil?1k service
#21
There is a guy on here that has way over 200,000 miles on Harley oil. Nothing succeeds like success. Oh and I have 61 years experience riding Harleys and haven't had an oil related engine problem yet. But then I do use Red Line in my hot rod Sportster. I used nothing but Harley oil back in the day.

You need to ask your self a few questions to pick the right oil.
1. Is the bike used daily?
If yes syn is better
If no dyno is better
2. Are you riding in exterm heat?
If yes syn is better
If no dyno is ok
3. Are you doing your services on time?
If yes syn is better
If no dyno is ok
4. Are you running a chrome or painted filter?
If chrome syn is better
if painted dyno is ok
5. Are you going to use a mixer or a refinery oil?
As you can see the only time dyno is better is if the bike sits for periods of time, this is due to two things.
1. The syn flows better so if it sit the oil flows down leaving bear metal causing wear starts.
2. Dyno oil contains a higher ash content which asorbs the moistoir the sets in from the engine heating up the cooling and in the air in general with the syn oil the parts are bear causing internal pitting spots.
3.chrome filters look awesome and are doubled walled so they are stronger against road depier BUT being double walled they cool less so heat is again a factor.
These lessons were learned in oil testing in small aircraft engines and rebuilding by aircraft and oil techians.
Shell t6 20w50 has a higher ash content then any other syn oil followed by mobil 1 v twin.
companies like shell mobil bp texico are refineries, companies like redline bluray amsoil vavoline are mixers all of which buy from bp refineries.

so you are looking at about $12 difference to go to the syn vs dino. Sounds like an easy choice. Yes it would be better to go with the mobil1, but its doubtful that a stealer would do that, and since the 1k service is free I can say as I blame ya for takin it to them.
