Default Need help finding a starting point of a project bike

I posted this on the "classic" section, but maybe this is a better info port.
I do a "winter project" each year.
It starts with the clock change and goes til Daytona week. If I get it done, I move on to the next on my list, if not, it goes on hold, get more parts for it during the riding season, the paint on if needed, til the cold weather gets here.
Over the years it's been a few old bikes, (off and on road, trials), a few jeeps, trucks, what ever catches my eye like a sharp stick!
This years WAS gonna be a copy of the "Then Came Bronson" sporty complete with the Swimm bike sissy bar, and "All Seeing Eye" decal, but then I saw it...................
In the Nov/Dec issue of "Motorcycle Classic" rag they did a feature on the '83 Harley Sporty XR 1000.
What made it "outstanding" was the exhaust on the left side and the dual carbs.
I can't seem to recall any H.D. Sportys with the exhaust on the left?????????
This bike was based off the XR750 race bike, so that may be why.
I got a limited budget, (Next year is a new Ultra), so there be no special high preformance flow heads, big buck cams, etc.
This is a "cheap copy of a really cool bike" deal
So, the questions that nag my 2 remaining living brain cells.................
What years were the sporty exhaust on the left?????
We'll worry about the dual carb thing later.
Joe
Once an idea get's ahold of me. Well it's all over!

Start with that little hole in the front fender and build a bike around it : )
