I use the heated gear. Not so much for 40's - 50's, but it will work in those temps. And is good down to zero degrees (so far).
www.gerbing.com Is the company that makes the heated gear for HD.

I use First Gear overpants, thick warm socks, Columbia Bug-A-Boots (8", good to -65F), When it's in the upper 30"s with blasting wind, like yesterday, I'll add a pair of long johns. Topside, layers that include at least one thermal shirt and either a lined leather jacket or my lined Tourmaster textile. Add a neck gaiter or balaclava and some good insulated gauntlet gloves and yer good to go.

Personally, I wear long johns (if extended ride, for 1 hr or less, skip that), jeans, chaps, 1000g Thinsulate leather hunting boots, two sweatshirts, leather jacket, FXRG gloves, 3/4 helmet (Bell Custom 500), face mask, goggles. When it gets colder than that, I'll add mitts. If it gets really cold, I add Carhartt coverall pants under larger chaps. That gets me down to -20. Colder than that, I don't ride.

It is -5C or 23F here in Montreal, got to bring the bike at the dealer. I'm wearing a Helly Hanson long john, leather pant, boots , a pull over made by Unwing (Wind and Wather prouf) heating vest under my leather jacket and eletric gloves. If I can only find my Unwind hood it will be an other day in paradise.
