Loose primary chain?

Loose primary chain?
Hey guys, been riding these past few days, and have been noticing a problem shifting, with my 2000 883, it shifts up just fine, but it seems when coming to a stop, and shifting down, it wont actually engage the gears, unless the clutch is let off, slightly, and then it "Thunks" into gear, then you can shift to the next one down, and repeat the process of shifting and letting off the clutch a bit, also, sometimes when this happens, it creates a grinding noise, until it clunks down, not too technically inclined, but could this be a loose primary chain? or something more serious? Thanks.

When going from speed, you gotta shift down as you slow down. If you wait until you get to a stop and try to down shift it won't work and you'll be stuck in the gear you were in when you started slowing down. To get out of it you have to let the clutch out a tad to shift down again.
Simple process, but it may be your problem. Do you hold the clutch and wait until you stop before shifting down? I've done that a couple of times and never figured it out until I had the tranny apart and noticed how the teeth engage.

Definately could be a misadjusted clutch. Be sure to check it at the clutch hub and the cable adjuster. Doesn't sound quite like a primary chain issue. Also could be the shifter dogs are worn in the transmisson. Seen that enough times to know how bad that can affect shifting. Check all adjustments and if the problem still persists, probably the transmission.
