I'm looking into buying a used 1200. what years should I stay away from. I'm looking to spend 3-4,000. This includes 70's-today.

In 2004, they went to a rubber-mounted motor. In 2007, they went to fuel-injected engine. For comparison, i bought an '08 xl1200c for about $6200 (including taxes). I'd definitely go with '04 or newer... and '07 if you can afford it. Just my 2 cents...

You can probably find a rubber mount 883 (2003-2006) in great shape for less than $4000. If you want a 1200 then you might end up with a rigid mount (1996-2003). Both of these models have carbs. Like the previous post says an efi model will cost you more. But either way they are great bikes and should last you till you are finished with it.

Depends on if you want a carb or not. However, you can get the carbed years 06 and back cheaper than the newer ones. I know I paid less for mine since it wasn't FI.

HD has always had the best FI in the industry. I would go for an 07 or later. FI manages fuel to this air cooled engine to keep head temps within limits.

how bad is the vibration on the 90's models? i am more worried about things like oil leaking and how well the engine and everything will hold up. how mechanically sound the bikes are. I'm coming from metric bikes so im looking for most reliable.

I run a modified 96XLH. I'm 50 and I don't see the vibe problem. Well cept from some pussies on the forums.
I've been running the **** out of mine for years. From 1/8 and 1/4 mile drag tracks to 1900 mile round trips on it. No drips, no spits or sputters and I'm in the process of building another one.

They are the best years Sportsters ever made.

I like a carb bike, none of the remap/fulepack problems that are all over this site. Its also real easy to get to stage one and back again if ya want.

Rubber mount seems to be good although I cant see all that much differance really.

I got my 2000 1200 custom 5 years ago for $5200, 900 or so miles on it now has 18000. Could not be more pleased.

Stage one and a half, pearl yellow / total kromed out, drag pipes / bars, new tires, bags, Lapera seat, and all maintance. It's for sale Mcn nice little scoot give me a call. www.deckmastersllc.com I have a FXD in my sites but I cant get it till I sell. JonMon
