Checking the relief port is easy, from the H-D master cylinder rebuild kit instructions:

"Verify proper operation of master cylinder relief port. Actuate brake lever with reservoir cover removed. A slight spurt of fluid will break fluid surface in reservoir compartment if all internal components are working properly."

Your fluid level should be about 1/4 inch below the top edge of the reservoir, there is a ridge there at the proper height.

I agree, it sounds like you are okay. If you are worried, then take it easy for several miles with frequent stops to check your brakes. If they are not smoking hot after mild use you are good to go.

I'm jealous....I wish I had that problem instead of a brake lever that goes back 3/4 of the way before the brakes start to work!

Front brakes are made so that they provide about 70% of your total stopping power when using both bakes. Like everyone else has said, sounds like you did a great job putting them back to the way the should me. Yes, pads are suppose to touch ever so slightly.
