custom paint job $ ?
the only paint threads I can find on here were for DIY . I just stink at painting & have started getting some pricing . I am looking to paint my 2 fenders & tank a good quality gloss black with metal flake .
had a quote for $650 & that's with me taking off the parts , dropping off / pick-up & reinstalling .
i'm sure it will be a great paint but it was a bit of sticker shock.
what's the norm for a decent paint job ? I don't want a Maaco job or a show bike $$ job either , something in between .

Never have quoted out paint for a bike before but $650 I guess doesnt sound to terrible if you think about breaking it down.
Battery cover
Oil cover
rear fender
front fender
gas tank
say 3 hours of prep time to sand them down and get them primed and ready for shooting @ say $80 per hour labor fees your at $240. then you will probably have 5 hours in painting time, few coats each, dry time and then re-shoot for the metallic flake. 5 @$80 your at 400. Then you have to take into consideration the cost of materials, probably $50-100 there if they have to order it custom, if its something they can mix on site it would be cheaper but would be worked into time/labor. I could see $600-800 easy enough, truth be told I would have expected a full 1000 min. I would get a few quotes though. Never hurts to reach out to multiple shops to get the best price, while still remaining quality.

That's actually a pretty good price. I looked into metal flake and got an even higher price just for the tank. That's why I ended up stripping my tank to the steel and leaving it that way. Ultimately that's the look I like better anyway so I'm happy. Metal flake is pricey because it's a pain for the painter. But it does look sweet!

The painter I'm using says 1000 bucks for a white pearl with gold flake on tank, fenders, side covers, belt guard, headlight and tail light bezel. Undercoat for the fenders. I do all the wrenchin'. I'm trading labor for some work around his house, so it'll be less cash out-lay, but still not cheap. The material (primer, base, top-coat and flake) is expensive, about $400 for my bike. Getting the prep done and the finish wet sanding/polishing is labor intensive. I've tried it. It sucks. Especially for a novice.
I've tried the home-garage painter "pro" in the past with little luck. Almost good enough, but never what I want. Instead of buying the tools, learning and doing it myself, I'm going with a pro who has the experience, a shop and all the appropriate equipment. $650 sounds decent for 3 pieces. You should ask about a warranty. If it's done right, that shouldn't be an issue.

thanks
thanks for all the feed back everyone , that puts a new perspective on it for me .
this all started when i got a new fender for the front & stopped by the local Maaco & was quoted $75 to paint the fender only .
in retrospect I guess you get what you pay for (?) . then i got all eBay crazy & bought a 4.5 gallon tank !
my bike does have an expensive paint job with tons of flake but that was someone else's creation & i need my own statement so to say .
I thing for sure ,this is getting as bad as a drug habit....lol intervention needed ! ?
