Value assistance - 2003 883 w/250 miles
I'm in a slight debate with a buddy over the value of a Sporty and I'd like to hear your input. It's an '03 883, two tone paint, stage 1, 250 miles. Guy bought it years ago and died, and it's been sitting in the garage. His wife had a mechanic get it running a couple years ago, but since then it's sat. Battery is toast, tank is ok, but I suspect the carb is gonna need a going through. I don't have any information on the owner, and she's not trying to sell it, so I do not and will not have pictures. I'm hoping that my buddy passes on it and gives me the information, but it's a pipe dream at this point.
Knowing that it's going to need a full fluid change, battery, carb cleaning and probably tires, what would you think it's worth as is?

My starting point is to split the difference between trade-in and retail, which would be $3000. It's only got 250 miles on it, so it can't be in too bad shape. I would add some extra for the low mileage and garage kept. I would take that back though because it hasn't been run in a while.
If you're really concerned that it's going to require a lot of work to get it running, I would suggest putting a new battery in it and seeing if it fires up. I'm betting that it probably will.
BTW, I bought an '01 XLH with 3k miles on it. I didn't have to do anything to it -- not even replace the tires. I did replace the fluids when I put on the stage 1 stuff (breather, carb jets and slip-ons). Bike runs like a charm.

Around the midwest, I would say:
Mint: $3500
Avg: $3000
Needs Work: $2500
Needs A LOT of Work: <$2000 depending
Based upon your description, I personally would be trying to get it around $2000-$2500 and drop about $500 to get it running, turn around and sell it in the spring for $3500, especially considering the time of year (Florida is a little different though).
