Search some more. It happens all the time. Nothing you can do about it, they are just unreliable gauges.

I bought a new '07 1200L and after about 2 or 3 years the light started coming on intermittently also. I never even cared as I filled up at the same miles every time and never had a problem. exactly 42 in the city and 52 when on a putt. As long as you have a trip meter to use, it'll be more reliable anyway. Congratulations on buying a great American bike!!

you can do that to start, and watch and see how much it takes, pretty soon you will figure out how far you can go before the next fill up..

No! Learn your bike. You know what the gas tank holds, according to the owners manual. If you refill it when the light comes on you know how much is left. So you can work out how far you can travel before you run out. Just allow a sensible margin, for safeties sake.

Bikers have had this problem since the reserve gas tap was invented, long before I started riding back in the 1960s. Back then we had to wait until the engine stopped to tell us to turn to reserve - now you have an idiot light - so make good use of it!

If that light really bugs you it is switched on by a float inside the tank. That is on a steel wire, which you can bend, to 'adjust' the point at which the light comes on. Get a factory service manual to learn how to get inside your tank.

Looking at the exploded view of the tank parts inside a Sportster tank, I dont think the sensor is on an old school type float. Could be wrong, but I dont see it.

Oops! Quite right, I was going by experience with my RG tank and the current touring bikes, which still use a wire float. Current Sporty tanks (having checked!) have a 'sensor' which doesn't look as if is easily adjusted. We could do with a volunteer to take a closer look.....
