Default Bigger tank options for a 72?

I love my 72, but hate stopping for gas every 80 miles. Any suggestions for larger tanks? I'm assuming some of the O.E. tanks, like a XL1200C tank, would fit.

I put a 883 tank on my 48. Now I can get back and forth to work all week without having to fill up. It is 3.3 gallons and doesn't change the look of the bike much. My fuel light now comes on at about 82 miles and I usually have 3/4 to 1 gallon of fuel left in the tank.

I have seen more than a few 48s and 72s with the Custom 4.5 gallon tanks and they look great. Better than I ever thought they would.

Did it effect your seat at all? I've been considering putting a LePera seat on my bike, and they list seats separately for the 48 and 72 from the rest of the Sportsters.

They list it separate because it stops right at the tank mount. You can use the 48/72 seat on any stock tank you use.

+1 on that! Think that the best looking option is the 883 Iron or the Nightster tank. Won't mess with the org lines of the bike to much. But...if its as much capacity as possible 4,5 (17 liters) would probably be the best choice.

Yep. I've had my 72 for about 6 months now. My *** is killing me. New mustang seat arrives Monday. My very next add will be something that increases fuel capacity. There's a guy on here who put a nightster tank on a 72 and it looks really good. It was two tone with a denim bottom so he didn't even need to paint it and it looked good on the denim 72. I found a store called Scooters on ebay, they claim to have aftermarket 3.3gal tanks that'll fit, but they are raw and will need to be painted. I'm worried that'll get pretty expensive just for the sake of adding another gallon of fuel, but I'm doing it anyway. Like you, I'm tired of filling up 3 times a week just to get to work and back.

Didn't have to change a thing. I swapped out the bars at the same time.

I love the 72 (in red) and it would be a shame to swap out the beautiful tank for a new one. That said, I think the MoCo using that 2.2 tank is a mistake. I think the 3.3 looks great and had decent capacity. The 72 would have been the perfect Sportster if it had the 3.3.

Funny enough, I'd like to get a 4.5 tank for my bike for the added capacity while traveling.

I bought a mint-condition tank that was originally on a 2007 1200R. I love the look and the extended range that it provides. It is an easy install.

Good 3.3 tanks are difficult to find. Many on ebay have a "minor" dent near the front due to a drop.
