Default sportster, 2 holes not 3?

so the sportster has 2 holes not 3? engine/ oil tank and then the other one that I assume is called the primary? is this right?

so I shouldn't use gear oil in the primary(or whatever its called) of my 2011 sportster? at least that is what some say.

I was planning on putting a good synthetic motorcycle motor oil in the oil tank and the a good synthetic gear oil in the other (were you take the inspection cover off and fill to the required point). I know everybody has there preferred brands so im not getting into that. I just want to know if I can put a good gear oil in the "primary/transmission area of the sportster?

im lost

2 holes
1: your primary is you oil tank which you can drain through the drain plug at the bottom of the bike
2: your gear oil...you drain your gear oil through a nut right under the derby cover...to fill your gear oil, take off the derby cover where the gears and clutch is located and add the gear oil in there, either that or the inspection cover where your primary chain is located

Motor oil in oil tank, and gear oil in derby/inspection cover...Don't mix
Hope this helps

Regarding the fluids, I do not use synthetic or semi synthetic in the primary on any of my bikes. Good old 20W-50 fossil for me. Engine is a different story … in the crankcase I use a full synthetic.

My recommendation is to follow what your owner manual notes.

run1fsr, thats what i do too...regular oil in my primary and synthetic in my gear box...but i change them both pretty frequently like every 2k ill change both...I'd rather pay for an oil change than a new bike

stockglock....maybe sure you go to harley to get your oil filter...DON'T put some piece on there!!...i had my dad go and pick up a filter for me once and he got me some cheap piece that almost caused my engine to explode...he shouldve known better because he had a sportster but now has a dyne low rider...
that a$$hole would've never put that on his bike though smh

How does that work on a sportster??????????????
The gearbox and primary is all one unit, and uses the same oil FSS.

Engine oil in the oil tank, and you can use engine oil in the transmission if it's the correct grade. please read the manual.
