As some of you know, my poor bike has to stay outside because I don't have a garage. (I do have a cover). Since I ride it to work a lot, even when it's been 40 degrees out, I was wondering how much time should I let it warm up before I head out?

I would say 5 mins of so. My bike stays in the garage, I let it warm up for 2-3 minutes while I gear up, then I take it easy for a mile or 2.
Let it warm up until the rocker covers feel nice and warm... About 5 mins. It's important to let it warm enough so the aluminum cases, cylinders, and heads expand and seal well against the base and head gaskets before putting load on the engine.
I've read here a H-D takes about 20 miles to warm up. Too many variables involved to say exactly. Ambiant temperature, brand and condition of oils. That read indicates long time for wheel bearings, gaskets, and everything to reach the too hot stage. Seems like the longer and slower is best.

That may be true. My ride to work is only 7 miles that takes me about 10-12 min. It's the initial warm up before heading out that I'm concerned with.
