Historic Old Wooden Bridges - Keep open for motorcycles?
Could some old-fashioned wooden bridges be kept open for motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians?
Instead of tearing them down.
Does anyone have any experience in working with groups or state highway departments on this? In any state?
Is there an old-bridge advocacy group?
Motorcycle historic touring group of historic places? Bicycle touring groups? Anybody to ally with?
For example:
Near me there is a one-lane wood-surface bridge across the Rappahannock River in Virginia that is closed to all traffic.
I walked across it today, and I thought it was perfectly safe for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcycles.
All it would take is a big post at each end of the bridge that would make an opening too narrow for cars but would allow bicycles, motorcycles, and pedestrians through. That would actually save the expense of tearing it down!

try contacting the Blount Co. Alabama County Commission......they recently (within the last 15 years) had 3 historic covered bridges restored and put back into service at 3 ton limits.
these bridges see daily traffic up to and including pickup trucks.
you can see their work at https://www.theoutbound.com/alabama/...-blount-county
I have several pics of my bike on this trail somewhere on this forum.
