In most states - if not all - you don't have a "choice" to wear a seat belt in a cage.
To me its no different on 2 wheels regarding a Helmet.
Missouri requires riders wear a helmet. Technically they give me a choice. If I want to ride I wear a helmet, if not then I don't ride. Pretty simple choice for me. After all I paid some good money for my ride, whats $50-$60 for a helmet.

Every once in a while I will be riding & someone will pass me not wearing helmet. 99% of the time they have Illinois plates.

I can't count the # of times something has flew up off the road & hit my helmet. Each time I think, Cr@p that would have hurt if all I was wearing was a doo-rag.

I promised my wife I would never wear a beanie/brain bucket as long as I was married to her. So I bought a DOT helmet, put a spike on it & ride like I want.

Technology has changed in the last 2 years for helmets. They have carbon fiber, lighter materials. Don't knock em till you have tried the new ones.

You might as well wrap newspaper on your head if you wear a brain bucket IMO.

The solution here is to continue fighting to repeal Tennesee's mandate. Freedom of choice eliminates the bickering as to what helmet style or color or shape someone can choose to wear. A full face in international safety orange with all kinds of conformity decals isn't going to appeal to many.

Werent a lot of these laws leveraged by the insurance companies?

I think if an adult wants to ride with no helmet, its their choice. Me? I always wear a full face or a modular helmet.

Which is different from 20 years ago. In that era, riding clothes were what you put on in the morning. I never wore a helmet then.

In the intervening years I stopped riding but never stopped watching and Ive seen so many minor accidents turn ugly that I personally choose to wear one.

My wife wears a helmet too, but she chooses to wear a half helmet, she doesnt like the FF ones. Here again, her choice.

That said, if a rider elects to purchase a helmet they should be able to have faith in its labelings. If a dealer is passing off goods that dont meet guidelines by using fake labels then they should answer for this.

I was havin a conversation with a non-rider I work with the other day...and wouldn't ya know it, he brought up the helmet subject. I expressed my opinion that the gov had no business tellin me that I had to wear a helmet, and...just to make it fair, and bring it to his level...that they also had no business tellin us we had to wear seatbelts. He up 'n says, "Sure they do...they're the government!" The sad thing was...he wasn't jokin.
He'd have understood you better if you'd spoken his language... "baaaa, baa, baaaaaaa. Baaa baaaa baa baaa..."

By the way, if you want to add a comment to the agency about this (and hopefully everyone will!), just go here: http://www.regulations.gov/fdmspubli...000064807333ad

They seem to work fine for racers who crash at 200 mph. Why would you imagine they wouldn't work at 55-80?

I believe it too was Tn.
Helmets required on scoots, but it is illegal to wear one in a cage, cause it reduces your vision and hearing.
Sort of not funny how the SAME device can do BOTH things.
S'posedly safe as can be on a scoot, but so unsafe in a cage. HUH?!?!?!?
Not only that, but, most deaths in cage accidents are the result of ....(drum roll please)... head injuries.

There is no rhyme or reason to some laws. Illinois has a mandatory seat belt law, but no helmet law. Helmet laws apply to motorcycles, but not cars. Some states have helmet laws but no seat belt law...

Really?

What right is given up with helmet laws? I've read through the BOR a time or two, and I don't recall seeing motorcycle helmets mentioned.

The right and freedom of *choice* as an adult. It's not like murder being against the law, unless someone uses the motorcycle as a weapon, but if that was the case, toothpicks all the way to cars and trucks and planes should be 'outlawed'. It's the choice I want to be able to wear a piece of clothing (or whatever) if *I* want to or not.

We can even argue the uselessness of it and the *right* it takes away from me like this.......They (the government of some kind) makes a law that I *MUST* wear a helmet because I could hurt myself otherwise without one.
Okay, fine, if they want to be like that, then since freezing weather can kill, it's now against the law to *NOT* wear a coat or jacket when the temperature drops below 40 degrees. Hey, some people can walk around in 40 degree weather and still sweat, some can't, but guess what, the *right* to now go without was just taken from you. How? By making it a law.

More 'laws' do not fix anything. The problems need to be fixed at the root...quit giving drivers licenses away so damned easily! *ANY* kind of license, but *especially* cage licenses, and especially to kids! Make the tests much, much harder. Make the driving tests mandatory everywhere and harder to pass. So what if more people fail. They can use public transportation or use their heads and common sense better and get the license to drive and actually *BE* better drivers.

yonaton--some people will never understand.if we wernt outnumbered 5 to 1 we wouldnt have this problem.most people wont get that either.
someone said you had a choice....you can either wear a helmet or not ride.thats the kind of talk the goverment does to the people as if we are 3 yr olds...you can either have carrots or green beans.you have a choice.whatever you want....carrots or green beans.me,i dont like those choices..i think i want to see whats behind door number 3 bob.
i can get fat as a pig, smoke like a train, take all the legal dope thats advertised on tv,not wear a coat in the winter(look at all the freezing homeless people in the winter why not fine them?) have a pet rattlesnake, have unprotected sex with the skankiest diseased hos i can find go cliff jumping and skydiving, hiking in the desert with no supplies..and thats all ok but i must wear a moto helmet????? now does it seem absurd?
i have always wondered how a motorcycle cop can give someone a ticket for no seatbelt?i couldnt bring myself to do that if i were a cop.i couldnt bring myself to do alot of absurd cop things.
slowly i am starting to beleive that some people are genetically prone to be slaves.i dont mean that in a racist way.some people just dont seem to understand they should have a choice.
