What really caused this guy to scrape and crash?

Rider error and yes he had plenty of room to make that he just pushed too hard. He kept pushing one, two, and three times scraping and eventually lifted the rear.
If he would have lifted throttle a little more on the first or second scrape he would have been fine but charged right on through the third. I'm not sure anyone could have saved it after the third scrape causing that spin out.

The rider was not doing all he could but he was going down regardless... because he was taking that corner faster then 10 mph...
Foot out, foot in, leaned in, leaned out, doesn't matter. Too fast for the road because speed+frame+road:
He was on that famous corner on Mulholland Highway that is #1 for ejecting riders. I've been on it. It's crazy.
It's a severe decreasing radius uphill turn that surprises anyone riding it. It's a frame scraper at anything above sitting still.
Hundreds upon hundreds of events are recorded at that corner (that's why it's on video and there are 10 photographers sitting there waiting for people to crash).
It jacks up Cars too.... all on Youtube.
So to answer the OP's question. He could avoided the accident if he didn't ride THAT road with THAT bike.

As far as his arms being out of place...I believe he was counter steering, as he should be in that type of turn. I dont think he was going that fast, but more the angle of his entrance was all wrong...which happens all the time with a decreasing radius turn...if he had been on a crotch rocket or something with more clearance he would have made it no problems....I dont think he was over his head ability wise, as I thought he did a killer job, right til the primary started dragging and he low sided...if he just had a tiny bit more clearance he would have made it I believe.
As far as braking in the turn, no way...if he has ABS, that will pulse the front brakes and load the front end up even more, making the low side a forgone conclusion....if anything, he should have gotten more on the gas and possibly could have gotten it around...(or at least thats what my 15 years on sportbikes would say....)
