Anyone replace their gas tank emblems themselves? Need advice on removing without damaging paint. And on placement of new emblems, do you measure and mark somehow. My stock emblems on '06 SG are peeling back maybe a 1/2" at the front from the tank. Don't know if I caught towel on edge when drying or if it just the curve of the tank. Thanks.

 

I think that mine are doing the same thing noticed it while washing it? You can take a piece of floss and cut through the tape and use goo gone to remove the tape from the take and emblem

get the 3m type two sided red-tape to remount.

 

I don't know how to get them off, but, when I put new emblems on a newly painted tank, I made a paper template. Used a brown paper grocery bag and found things that appear on both sides of the tank. Like the end of the dash or something. I then marked those on the template and figured where to mount the emblem and marked that on the template. Once you figure out one side you just turn the template over and use it on the other. Hope this clearer than it sounds. It is really pretty easy.

 

Use a hair dryer to heat em up and they will come off a lot easier...

 

There put on with 2-sided tape.... Use a Heat Gun or a Hair Dryer... Slowly heat up an area and slowly work them off... Take your time and they'll come off - Rush it and you could mess -up the clear coat...
Did a friends Yamahooooo (opps) and found that the tank was dented under the emblems - & of course Yamahoooo would not replace the tanks under warranty....

 

Well how ironic is life, just came in from washing and polishing my bike and as luck would have it I too have an emblem starting to peel off. For christ sake my obsessive compulsive disorder is at full throttle now! But wait hmmm....Maybe I will find a different emblem to put on.

My dealer reattached the left front end of mine at the last visit. Don't know what method they used, so fsr so good.

that is all great info as i plan on taking mine off and getting the harley name painted on and clearing over.
i think they are a pain to clean around

 

Thanks all. It's just aPIA to havecrap peeling off in less than a year. I'll probably look at a different style emblem also.
