Default Dyno tune

I have a 2016 Ultra Limited with 10,000 miles and decided to go with a stage 1 and dyno tune at my local dealer. I went with cobra pipes and mufflers and SE air kit with a Screaming Eagle Tuner. Even though the bike runs better and much cooler I am disappointed with the gas mileage. I know some of you will say who cares it runs better but with a properly tuned bike shouldn't you get better performance as well as better gas mileage. I rode over 500 miles this weekend with some highway at 70-75mph and mostly back roads at 55-60. The tank with the highway speeds was 34mpg and back roads was 39mpg. I made sure not to get on the throttle anymore than usual. Before tuning I would get about 40mpg at highway speed and near 45mpg on back roads. Should i take it back for a revised tune. How do you know if it was done properly? Input appreciated.

Had my bike tuned last year after installing cams, the tech tuned it without the breather on it and told me which one to get, still yet to do so so I'm running a little rich, I can tell by the mileage and the additional carbon on the caps of my exhaust. Bike runs great and eventually I'll change the breather out.

Ya can have power & drivability or mileage, hard to get both...

The best fuel mileage I gotten on the open highway was 42 MPG, running between 65 to 75 MPH.
Most of the time my mileage runs mid to high 30s for all around riding. Anyone that is getting
45 MPG, I would say is doing good. The altitude here in Northern Nevada is from 4,000 Ft. and
above.

It is a scientific fact that a Harley engine needs to run on the rich side to generate its maximum power. It needs to have lots of fuel available at ignition to use up all of the oxygen in the cylinder in the shortest time possible.If you lean it out you will in fact get more miles per gallon. The EPA will be pleased. But, your available power will be reduced.

a GOOD dyno tech will have a talk with u about your expectations, what kind of riding u do and whats most important to u. most dealers not so much.

some dealers even go as far as to load a canned map do 1 full pul hand u a sheet and charge ya for a full tune.

I had it happen to me. Took it to a local guy that was supposed to be the tuning guru. He put a new bottom end in the bike and then insisted it needed a tune. Wouldn't pass a gas station, had to downshift to make it up even the smallest of hills, bad backfires through tb before finally starting, bad fuel smell as noted by riders behind me, all this from what I suspect was an ill chosen canned $500 map. Took it to a dealer my buddy swears by in Tigard, Oregon and it was a whole different beast. I moved on and was happy with a dealer treating me right!

My bike in stock form got 44-45mpg. When I did a stage 1, pretty much stayed the same. But bike ran so much better.
Now after cams, compression & dyno tune I'm sitting at 30% more h/p & torque. And lost 10% in mpg. So 40mpg now. That's a trade off I can live with.

Hard to compare with different riding styles, air quality, fuel quality, etc. Etc.

I probably would not be happy at 34+/-?????

I'm not sure where you're located but finding a good tuner is hard. I have a similar stage 1 upgrade as you, see my signature, and it was tuned by a local Harley shop. Engine is not much cooler, but decel pop is gone, has great throttle response and I'm averaging 40mpg on a combo of backstreets and highway. Check out Harleytuner on this forum. Super nice guy, very knowledgeable and he even looked over my dyno sheet for me. He's in Virginia, I'm in OH. With that setup, unless you're really jumping on the throttle a lot, you should do closer to 40 mpg's. Good luck!
