Why me Lord?
Just left the dealership that most here in SW La. recommend for BB motor work and dynotuning and I was ready to RUN out of the building at the end of my meeting.
The main "wrench" had some makeshift porting and polishing workbench. His headwork looked like he took a rat-tail file to the intake and exhaust ports and "cleaned them up"......uuuggghhh..
He recommended a Kuryakyn throttle body for a BB build..............uggghhh #2.
Said the SE 255 cam was the cam of choice for a 103 build.............did I say uggghhh yet?
He had dyno maps to show me of 96" 103 builds that were making 84hp and ~110tq.......84hp?....let me reiterate........UUUUGGGGHHHH!!! Guess this was a reflection of the excellent "porting" job.
He didn't even know there was a 107" kit available for the 96" and never heard of HQ cams..........uuuugggggggggggggggggggghhh......... instead showed me some Arista(?) pistons that were supposed tobe the bomb for BB builds.........instead of Wiseco.......
Much more "enlightening" moments, but won't bore you with the details.
I was so discouraged by the end of today I think my little ole 96" will stay 96" for a while......unless I get an invite to Ft. Worth.......[>:]

Hey, it could have been worse. You could have actually had him do the work, and then find out what a hack he was....I have learned the hard way a couple times before. I don't take anyones word for performance, because performance is relative. What one person considers a well built engine, another person thinks its a POS. So, I think you did the right thing going and finding out first hand, and not with your wallet and time. There are plenty of good performace guys out there, you just have to take your time. Have you hung out at the local "bike nights"? I have found that to be a good place to find out about local talent. Good Luck on your search!
I think we all have been there. I know some good mechanics that either take forever or rush through and have a oneway street view on there work. Talented but would not let them work on my bike.

I believe Spike is next in line for a DFW build..... but ya never know who might be next....????...
Just a side note guys......I'm not bashing the dealership as the owner is a stand-up guy and they really took care of me today, just gave me the wrong answers to my questions, that's all.
Phil and the rest of you guys, when the time comes I would appreciate the input of components. I'd LOVE to tackle it myself, but the tolerances that I'd need to attain are out of my area of expertise.........which is extremely limited to say the least...LOL![8D]
Interesting day and those thatlive in an area wheredealerships and indys can and will build a top-notch motor........consider yourselves lucky. These cajuns down here think duct tape is comparable to red thread locker.
