how loud is too loud SGS

I agree on all of the above.
I'm not sure of your experience or how long you have been riding but I have always liked a good louder tone than stock, but after ten years of riding almost daily and the continual ringing in my ears I hear constantly now, I will probably remove the cat but keep the stock mufflers on my next bike.
Nothing sounds cooler than a Harley with a nice set of pipes but after a couple of hours a day commuting or all day on a trip. I'd rather hear just the wind and my stereo. I guess I'm getting old.

My 16 Limited, stock, and both the wife and I love the quietness when riding! Will I do a stage 1, eventually, but it won't be loud.
Been riding 25 yrs, mostly around and in Shitcago, and I can say this; The distracted drivers don't care how loud your bike is, they'll still run into you. It's up to the rider to be both offensive and defensive in their driving habits.
And yes we are getting old! haha

Sound, and especially good sound, is 100% subjective to the person hearing it. When I bought my first Harley years ago I wanted it loud....it was a Harley and I wanted everyone to hear it.....as the years went by I found that just making noise wasn't cutting it anymore, I still wanted louder than stock but i didn't want the rider behind me to have to drive a mile back because he couldn't stand listening to my obnoxious pipes all day. You'll have to listen to a few to hear the sound you like. Personally I like a deeper rumble that barks when you crack it but tones down at highway speeds and is radio friendly at 60-70mph. I do not like a blatty sounding rattle that does little but raise the decibels. I have RC Xhaust now but am taking a hard look at some VH 450 destroyers. The RC's are ok but I really like the deeper sound. I remember a time when I would never look at Screamin' Eagle slip ons because they were too quiet.....they don't sound bad to me now.

Sound, like taste in music/interior decor/women/oil/tires, is subjective.
As mentioned before, go to a local bike night or camp out at your dealer for awhile and listen to bikes as they come in. If you hear something you like, ask the rider what they are and what they think of them. I've yet to meet a rider who didn't want to talk about their bike.
Or buy a set of Rush slip ons and call it a day. Trust me, I'm an anonymous guy on the internet.

2 things. Ear plugs. Depending on how long I will be riding, I have in the ear plugs for music, standard foam ear plugs and for quick trips to the store.... nada.
