Default 07 96ci build

hey whats up im looking to pump up my stock 96 want to go 103 or maybe bigger with hi compression pistons 10 to 1 , and redshift cams maybe 575 or 527.. running a thundermax tuner and 2-1 dragos pipes. looking for some advise from you guys. i have 40k on the bike and is still has extended coverage. would crank runout be something to worry about also ? thank you

It wouldn't hurt to check runout, you will need to remove the cams and plate to be able to get a dial indicator in there to check it. If not too far out then you are good to go. My personal limit would be about .007, less is better if you want to run big compression/inches. Aligning, pinning and welding the flywheels will of course require engine removal and total tear down. Gets costly.

If you go bigger bore, you will need compression releases. You can have your heads drilled and tapped for manual releases, unless you want to spend the money to have them machined for factory releases, but you will need to do wiring for them. I believe there is an H-D wiring harness that can be attached but don't know the numbers or anything.

The runout on my 07 at 40+ thousand miles was .004. Meaning I couldn't run gear drives even if I wanted to. Because I wanted to avoid the additional costs of decompression valves and the associated harness I installed S&S 551 Easy Start cams. In the future I plan on putting in a 106 or 107 big bore. I'm really happy with my Cam selection. I have about 3000 miles on them so far and finally got the Tune correct with my Power Vision utilizing the auto tune function. Good luck with your build.

I don't really know enough to advise. But I will say if it looks like you need to change the crank, start pricing up a crate engine.
I wish my mechanic would have spent more time doing this, it would of worked out the same or cheaper.

The PO of my 07 had the crank spin at about 20k with a completely stock set up. HD rebuilt it under the extended warranty with a welded crank. It was a $5000 repair.
If the OP chooses to ignore your advice then I very much reccomend that he verify his extended warranty will still cover the engine with the extensive mods he plans.

We have a dedicated Tech Engine section, where you will find Scott of Hillside Cycles and other engine specialists who can give you great advice on engine work - also do all you need!

Up until recently I had an 07 EGC with a FuelMoto 107, 10.5 compression, woods 777 and a V&H Propipe. Runout and the bottom end was never a problem, You'll need to upgrade the throttle body and jets FM suggested a 2008 SE TB with ,50 jets. (the stock TB is pretty much maxed out before you do a build like that.

thank you guys for the info its much appreciated, got my rear shocks from howard at motorcycle metal and bike is finally handling good enough to start pumping up the engine some.
