Default Tour Pak Luggage Rack Wieght Capacity

Hello everyone,

I know the tour pak luggage rack says a wieght capacity of 10 pounds. The wife and I did a practice pack of our luggage rack bag for an upcoming trip. The bag weighs 22lbs. I see people with bigger bags that have to be heavier than ours. Has anyone had any problems with a bag about 25lbs on their tour pak luggage rack? Just courious of other people's experience with their luggage rack.

Thanks,
Darrin

It’s mostly about handling. I’ve ridden with people that had huge bags on theirs, they had some challenges in slow speed maneuvers, and although they are very experienced, riding 2 up, dropped it once in a parking lot. Take some test rides with the weight you think you’d carry.

The only problem I've had is the heavy baggage makes your bike top heavy. Weight doesn't seem to harm the tour pack. Their is a pretty heavy metal plate under the pack for support.

Yes to both of those!

I am sure there is a limit to how much the tour pack can carry before damage is done. But it would be quite a bit more than 10 LBS.

That 10 LB recommendation is based on safety for the rider.
Too much weight up that high, and you will find it extremely difficult in slow speed situations. (Think coming to a stop on a slanted hill, etc.).

I know we have put more than 10 LBS in ours, and it was very noticeable when coming to stops.

As long as you are prepared, going over 10 LBS isn't a big deal. But the manufacturer is always going to base their recommendations based on safety.

We did a test run at 22lbs. You could only feel it in low speed turns. Seems like the general rule is 25 lbs when I was asking the hog chapter members the same question.

The Castle bag I have weighs 7 lbs (I believe) so it didn’t take much to get to 22lbs, but it was enough for clothes and stuff for our 7 day trip coming up

I added a rack to my tour pack. Seeing as this tag is what is recommended for inside, that 10lbs must subtract from what they say inside. Heaviest in saddle bags and lightest in trunk. We strapped our tarps and tent to our rack.

Thanks for the replies. I think we have it figured out. The clothes all rolled up tight are actually fairly heavy so they are going in a saddle bag inside one of those liners bags. We are going to put toiletries a small fan and some lighter items in the luggage rack bag. Next weekend we will pack the bike like we will for the trip and give it a test run.

My only contribution to this is to be careful when opening the lid. I have generally been at 25 lbs and I want someone supporting the fiberglass so it reduces the strain on the hinges.

Every one of those weight labels are from the lawyers. It is your riding skills that will determine what is going to cause issues .

I used to put a large canvass bag on top of my tour pack that weighed 20 or maybe 25 pounds. I two up, I would drag floorboards through turns.

wasn't long that we went to a cargo trailer to take all that weight off the bike. That worked very well.
