Default Which oil cooler for a touring bike?

Hi! I just picked up a low mileage '04 Ultra Classic... The long story short is that there is a decent price discrepancy between the Harley low-mount oil cooler and a Jagg low-mount oil cooler. I've had both in the past with no issues for either one.

Anyone know who makes the current versions of coolers for Harley? I can find the low-mount Harley cooler online for the low $300s and the Jagg cooler is closer to $400...

Any ideas?

Thanks!!

I’ve been eyeing oil coolers for a while now but haven’t pulled the trigger. One reason for the price difference could be the number of cooling rows, the more rows the better the heat transfer. I don’t think it would make much difference on a mostly stock 88” since they don’t run as hot as the 103’s. I wouldn’t have a problem running the Harley one if it was $100-$150 cheaper, but if you can swing it one with a fan would be the best, especially if you ride in town a lot.

You may want to consider a cooling fan like Love Jugs or JIMS Black ForceFlow Cylinder Head Fan Kit.

Cool Tough Choice

The fittings of on the Harley oil cooler are more substantial, and I am guessing less prone to leak, but, the Jagg oil cooler is much easier to install. I found a new Jagg on-line for only $331. My HD dealer wants as much to install the HD version as it costs; so, its installed cost wipes out any savings on the less expensive HD cooler. I haven't decided which way I am going to go, but given the heat in the summers in Nevada, I don't want to go another summer without putting one on.

I have an Oil Bud on two bikes. They are out of sight and almost impervious to damage. They are also expensive.

A side note about this, I had 3 voltage regulator failures on my 2012 Ultra with the stock oil cooler in place. The oil cooler was right were it would “dump” its heat onto the voltage regulator and reduce air flow to the voltage regulator. This is when I decided to spend the coin on the Oil Bud for this bike. Now my regulator I has an unobstructed flow of cool air while going down the road. I haven’t had a voltage regulator problem since. “Knock on wood.”

Was it because the stock oil cooler was causing the voltage regulator to over heat? I have no proof or scientific data to back up that claim but I also haven’t had another voltage regulator failure. My first regulator was replaced for free because of the service letter concerning voltage regulators on 2012 models. The next two I paid for.

I’ve had the Oil Bud on the 2006 Ultra for at least 7 years now and on the 2012 Ultra for 4 years now. So far they have been trouble free. It makes getting the oil drain plug out a little more difficult but it’s not a big deal.

I am trying out an Evo short-wide cooler core with the Dyna oil filter adapter without thermostat on a SE big bore build. The core has fewer rows that are wider. I picked up a NOS chrome Dyna style adapter on fleabay for $50. I finished the build at the end of last summer and the engine felt like it was too hot at times. I had the older oil cooler core laying around and it tucks nicely below the voltage regulator. I was having difficulty finding an HD adapter plate that was not way overpriced ($185+, used). I took a chance on the Dyna adapter but it worked great. I didn't really want chrome, but the price was too good to pass. I also added the oil temp indicator kit to monitor the temp and so far this year it is running right under 200 F. I will see if I made any difference later this summer.

My Indy put the Jagg on my '04 Electra when he replaced the cam tensioner...he mounted it on the frame. He didn't want to mount it down below, behind the front tire for fear of rocks, etc, so he mounted it on the frame, and made a chrome guard for it also. It works for me, the 'ole girl has 55k on her..Upgraded the cam tensioner to the Screaming Eagle Hydraulic @ 30k
