Aftermarket shock price/performance perceived improvement only psychological
Certainly, except for late model HD shocks that are reasonably good, people like me with older cycles who changed out our OEM air shocks for expensive aftermarket shocks want to feel a noticeable improvement--for the price we paid. I believe the improvement we want to feel is directly affected by the price we paid.
Except for people on this board who have the money to try multiple aftermarket shocks one after another, most of us badly want to justify what we spent for shock improvement. I do not believe that improvement versus cost is actually there. Surely, almost any aftermarket shock is better than older HD versions; that is not in question.
I bought new Ohlins, 2-2b. They are okay, but not such a noticeable difference in quality from what I took off my 2006 Ultra (I changed the shock oil in these to 10W) that justifies the cost. Yes, my shocks are adjusted correctly, at least correctly enough.
True, I do not "carve" canyon roads at high speed. I do not long to scrape my floorboards on every sharp, speed turn. I have a road cycle, not a racing cycle.
Personally, I think all this shock talk here is mostly bullshit. Aftermarket shock improvements are marginal--except in the minds of those who need to justify their expenditures. Improvement over older OEM versions? Certainly. Worth the cost of aftermarkets? Questionable.

I get it now. What’s true for you is fact for all. Here’s a fact. The air shocks are garbage. I mean look around and see all the air shocks installed on automobiles from the factory? None
3 way adjustable gas charged out back and cartridges in front. This is how I made my bike rideable for 800 mile days.
