Just came across this post and will add something if the regulator wasn't issue. My 2011 drove me nuts trying to find problem. Then one day I noticed the harness that comes from the battery to the voltage regulator had two encapsulated wires in the plug. The postive one had come loose so when you pushed them together it only pushed the wire back and didn't mate with the regulator correctly. So seemed ok for a awhile then you hit a bump or turn on one to many things and it would start not charging. I went to HD dealer to buy the connector and they had 7 in stock. A sure sign that they were an issue. Either way after changing it there were no more problems for the last year so I"m sure that was issue.
