Default Cam install and backfiring

2007 FLHX (96 twin cam) S&S 551 cam install with S&S Quickee adjustable pushrods. After install bike started right up, sounded ok but a bit rough. Went for a 1/2 mile test ride. Bike started running worse, massive backfiring, through intake mainly. Bike stalled out, it will still turn over but even backfires while trying to start, however, it won’t start. Triple checked my timing with install did pushrods by the book and feel that it’s gotta be something else. Why would it start initially after the install, start backfiring and running like crap and now not start at all? Pushrod adjustment issue? Cam position sensor?

Is that an EFI bike -- if so what tuner did you use to install the map for that cam?

I have it at my Dyno guy’s shop. Will be tuned next week. Hoping my issue isn’t too uncommon as I know after a cam install a good tune/dyno is required.

This is exactly why I go to the dealer. (And typically take flack on here)
Have them do the work and when I pick it up it is running fine or they fix it right

Your symptoms sound like a cylinder valve adjustment was done on the wrong TDC. But I’m sure you were on the base circle if you’ve done this before.

If you were running it on the stock tune, it was running excessively lean. Hopefully you didn't run it long enough to cause any damage. If you did have a decent updated tune for the cam, you very well could have the cam timing off, or, push rods not adjusted correctly. It could be off on cam to crank timing, or, cam to cam timing.
